Before the return of the Toyota Supra, the 86 was the only sports car on the lineup. It was first introduced back in 2012 as the Scion FR-S, before transitioning to the Toyota lineup and being rebadged as the Toyota 86 after the Scion brand folded in the 2017 model year. Just a few short years later, the 2020 Toyota 86 is still an excellent sports car option despite the return of the Supra. The Toyota 86 might not have the legacy or pedigree of the Toyota Supra, but as an entry-level sports car it makes a great option. Powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine, it’s not as powerful as the Toyota Supra but it delivers a ton of impressive power at its price point. The engine is capable of generating 205 horsepower when equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission, or 200 hp with the 6-speed electronically controlled automatic.

One of the great things about the Toyota 86 is its diversity of choice. For instance, last year it was available in its own TRD Special Edition trim level. Now, for 2020, the 86 is available as the special Hakone Edition, named after a legendary stretch of road in Japan. This special edition takes everything offered in the 86 GT trim level and adds in several unique design cues.

But the Toyota 86 is every bit a regular Toyota vehicle as much as it’s a sports car. That means it offers plenty of great technologies and safety features in addition to its impressive power.
